The Swivel

A rotary drilling hose has a long cylindrical tube that conducts drilling fluid from the standpipe to the kelly and swivel. It`s a crucial part of the derrick because it helps raise and lower the bit and drillstring to complete the drilling process.

Swivel joints help prevent kinks that form in hoses when one end of the hose rotates opposite to the other. Hose kinking reduces flow and increases system pressure, which can wear out hose walls, crimps and end connectors over time.

The swivel`s ball bearing races allow it to rotate freely around its axis, which gives system components connected to the swivel the ability to rotate as well. While swivels can certainly improve your fishing, they are not necessary in every situation and can actually do more harm than good if used incorrectly. For instance, swivels can spook finicky fish, especially in clear waters where they may resemble baitfish or sand dollars. This is why it`s important to only use swivels in the situations that they are most needed and always use high-quality swivels, such as stainless steel options.
